Vitamin C and bone health.

Introduction:

It’s a well-known fact that many older adults suffer from bone loss or osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation reports that over 54 million Americans suffer from, or are at risk of, osteoporosis. This can be caused either by excessive bone loss or insufficient production of bones mass

Having weak bones can reduce mobility and increase the risk of bone breakage. When bone loss becomes too severe, bones might even break just from bumping into something or straining, like when you sneeze (called as sneeze or cough fractures).

How does vitamin C improve bone strength

What many people don’t realize is that osteoporosis is scurvy of the bones, which is a symptom of vitamin C deficiency. This means that increasing your intake of this nutrient can promote the growth of new, healthy bone…

A study from Mount Sinai Medical Centre  was able to demonstrate the protective effects of vitamin C against osteoporosis in an animal model. It was seen that the mice that were supplemented with vitamin C avoided bone loss. In another study, the researchers found that vitamin C deficiency caused failure of collagen synthesis. This resulted in symptoms of scurvy, such as spontaneous bone fractures.

More reasons to increase vitamin C intake

Increasing your intake of vitamin C can give you many other health benefits.

  • Lowers blood pressure — Taking vitamin C supplements has been shown to improve blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels.
  • Improved immunity — Vitamin C is most commonly used for its ability to boost immunity… It also has potent antioxidant properties that protect the immune cells from highly reactive molecules.
  • Lower risk of dementia — the potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of vitamin C are beneficial against dementia. It has also been associated with improved cognitive functions.

Conclusion:

It is thus seen that osteoporosis can be ameliorated by Vitamin C, in addition to Calcium and Vitamin D supplements.

WHAT THE MASTERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS REMEDY…

Tarentula Cubensis is my standby in any abscess where there is severe pain.  I formerly thought I had a wonderful remedy for such conditions in ARSENICUM and ANTHRACINUM but I have found that Tarentula Cubensis does much better.

  • Dr. Benthack.

In felons, Tarentula Cubensis is simply wonderful. I have seen felons, which had kept patients awake night after night, walking the floor in agony from the terrible pains relieved in a very short time that they could sleep in perfect comfort until the swellings spontaneously discharged and progressed into a rapid cure.

  • Dr. Nash

Tarentula Cubensis soothes the dying sufferer and I have never seen any other remedy do so.

  • Dr. Kent

By a very ingenious selection of AGARICUS by Dr. Korndoerfer, in the case of a 2 year old child who had evident meningitis and who was not relieved by APIS, SULPHUR etc., the rolling of the head ceased, alarmingly forewarning of imbecility happily vanished and the patient fully recovered. I used the drug in a case of typhoid in which the child rolled her head and bit her nightgown.  Some improvement followed.  TARENTULA was then given with slight aggravation followed by lasting improvement. The two should be remembered in impending imbecility.

Dr. E A Farrington.

I think TARENTULA CUBENSIS is more useful in whooping cough that IPAECAC or CASTANEA VESCA or any other remedy I know; it is marvellous.

  • Dr. Macfarlan.

HEPAR SULF, BELLADONNA, ARNICA and SILICEA are of no use in chronic boils and carbuncles.  TARENTULA or ANTHRACINUM clear up the boils in a few days miraculously and brilliantly.

  • Dr. Dorothy Shepard.

The Ayurvedic view on energy foods.

Ayurveda the most ancient Indian medical system has golden tips for solving your energy crisis.  Ayurveda advocates a diet that is generous in fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The ancient ayurvedic texts tell us that these foods are rich in life giving energy, healing powers, fighting body fatigue and have the power of detoxifying the body.

Grains have power:

The ancient seers used a term called as ‘Ojas’, an energy, which is the result of good digestion and creates a sense of lightness in the body, gives a person the inner energy or glow, confers immunity against infections and bestows the individual with bliss.

Long distance runners from Africa have always relied on carbohydrates in grains for long-term endurance and energy.  All carbohydrates are not the same. For instance the croissant is high in fat and low in nutrition.  Whole grains have lower cholesterol; they also have anti-bacterial properties and actually lower elevated blood sugar levels

Ayurveda considers rye, millet and amaranth as highly nutritious, as they have high protein and mineral content. In fact, these grains are considered so auspicious that they are used during Vedic ceremonies as items for worship.

Rye for instance, contains high proteins, and one cup yields about 15 grams of protein, 9 grams of iron and adequate quantities of B-complex vitamins, iron, zinc and copper which is an important trace element for boosting energy levels and raising the body’s immunity.

Energizing Vegetables and Fruits:

Ayruveda advocates that fresh vegetables and fruits should constitute forty percent of every meal. Green, leafy vegetables are rich in mineral and fiber, and they should be eaten often.

Ayurveda considers fruits as a rich source of energy.  Ayurvedic physicians recommend pears and apples, if you are hungry between meals. They recommend papaya, if you feel bloated after lunch.

Ayurveda strongly recommends the generous use of dry fruits, especially raisins. The ayurvedic texts extol the virtue of raisins calling them the best among dry fruits because it has the quality to enhance purity of the mind and pacify the mind and heart.  Dry fruits are a rich source of iron and Vitamin B6, and provide magnesium, calcium, zinc and potassium.  Raisins aid digestion and elimination when they are soaked in water overnight. One handful per person is a good amount everyday.

Ayurveda also cautions against energy draining foods:

The ayurvedic texts warn us not to eat left over foods or highly seasoned foods and foods that make us sluggish. Ayurvedic physicians were extremely conscious of energy draining foods, which clogged the micro-channels called as Nadis and created an accumulation of toxins.

Conclusion:

We have advanced a lot in this millennium.  But our diet practices are abysmal. We eat foods bereft of energy, we consume milk, which is a poison, we eat meat, and we eat tinned, canned and processed foods and do not realize how much harm we cause to ourselves.  It is fascinating how Ayurveda, a science that dates back thousands of years warns us of these dangers.  It was almost as if our ancient seers who wrote these treatises were aware, what humanity was going to come to in this millennium.

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES.

Bach flower therapy believes that diseases are a result of disharmony between the spiritual and mental dimensions of man. Bach flower remedies balance the mental dimension of humans and heal the body.

Introduction:

This therapy owes its existence to Dr. Edward Bach, a Harley Street specialist in London.  He found Homeopathy very tedious and time consuming.  In 1930 he began wandering the forests and hills in search of healing plants, which would heal a sick man without any side effects.  Being an intensely spiritual man, he was able to visualize a plant as an aid to healing the mind of the patient, just by meditating on it.

It did not matter to Dr. Bach what physical ailment the patient suffered from, but his main theory was that disease was as a result of disharmony between the spiritual and mental aspects of man.  The conflicting moods, hate and other negative emotions produce much unhappiness and this lowers the “Vital force” and causes disease. His theory was that by balancing the mental side of a person, the ‘vital force’ becomes strong and this heals the body.

There are about 30 popular Bach flower remedies. They are dilutions of the flowers with alcohol and they are dispensed in the liquid form.

Some useful Bach Flower Remedies:

Aspen is a remedy that is useful to combat unknown fears, when the patient is terrified that something terrible is going to happen.

Beech is useful when the patient is very critical and intolerant and always judging others.

Chestnut Bud is very useful for persons who repeatedly make mistakes in life.

Heather suits persons who are self centered with incessant talking.

Holly is useful for persons who are jealous, revengeful, suspicious, and envious and lack love.

Larch is a remedy that suits persons who have no confidence in their own ability and do not make further attempts when they fail.

Rescue Remedy is one of the most popular Bach flower remedies.  It is the combination of Rock Rose (terror and panic), Impatiens (mental stress and tension), Bethlehem (shock), Cherry Plum (desperation), Clemitis (light-headedness).  This remedy is a lifesaver and useful in emergencies.

Conclusion: Bach flower remedies are Holistic. This Alternative system is popular in Europe and can be studied and used by the layman for common mental fears and anxieties.

TIPS FROM THE MASTERS…

At birth, I give a dose of MEDORRHINUM if the child is inclined to be gross with a large head; if it is a little bit of a skinny baby that is snuffling almost as soon as it breathes, underweight, wrinkled and old looking, I give a dose of SYPHILINUM.

Dr. Krichbaum.

In children who look ‘old, dwarfed, wrinkled’, with also T.B heredity, SYPHILINUM and BACILLINUM given in turn, will work wonders.

Dr. Noel Pudephatt.

In old Syphilitics and non-syphilitics suffering for years and years from affections of the throat and skin, SYPHILINUM is indicated.

Dr. Leon. Renard.

If arthritic attacks alternate with urticaria, never occurring simultaneously, consider URTICA URENS. If arthritic pains alternate with pains, which change from throat to ear, from trachea or bronchi to teeth and if the pains are markedly aggravated from sunset to sunrise, SYPHILINUM is probably indicated especially if the patient dreads the night because of the suffering and subsequent weakness.

Dr. H. A. Roberts, M.D.

When the patient is aggravated by SULFUR, we must always think of the existence of a latent state of syphilis, if PULSATILLA, another antidote of SULFUR does not produce any result. (SYPHILINUM is an antidote to SULFUR).

Dr. Leon. Renard.

I have experimented more with so-called nosodes, and have had seemingly very good results from MEDORRHINUM as well as SYPHILINUM in intractable case of chronic rheumatism.  The most characteristic difference is that with MEDORRHINUM, the pains are worse in the daytime and with SYPHILINUM, in the night.

Dr. Nash, M.D.

When TUBERCULINUM fails, try SYPHILINUM, it often arouses a reaction.

Dr. William. Boericke, M.D.

In lymph-sarcoma, think of SYPHILINUM and CISTUS CANEDENSIS.

Dr. Leonrenard.

In primary Syphilis, SYPHILINUM has little or no effect at all and then MERCURY should be given in higher potencies.  SYPHILINUM will be useful as a remedy will be of great value in old syphilitics, where convalescence is particularly long after and acute disease.  It is in a way that when a patient that when a patient is slowly re-establishing himself after Typhoid, a single dose of SYPHILINUM will bring him his appetite, strength, sleep and a rapid gain of his former weight.

Dr. Kent, M.D.

When SULFUR is prescribed in any case and produces alarming aggravation, one must think of the existence of a latent state of syphilis and then SYPHILINUM works well and antidotes the over action of SULFUR.

Dr. W. H. Goodwin.
