HEAT THERAPY.

images

Heat as a therapy, has been known to man since pre-historic times. There are many references in the writings of Ayurvedic physicians, Arabs, Greeks and many physicians from ancient civilizations about the value of heat.

How does Heat help?

Heat therapy is based on the principle that warmth relaxes the muscles, dulls the pain and reduces the inflammatory process in the body.  Heat also promotes the discharges of boils and abscesses.  Heat can be applied to relieve stomach cramps during periods or due to digestive upsets.  Heat also helps alleviating the aches caused by sudden muscular spasms or in arthritis.

index

Heat works by relieving relaxing the muscles.  Heat helps by increasing the blood flow to the injured or inflamed part and this increases the oxygen supply to the part and promotes healing.  Heat has probably a direct effect on injured nerves and may act by releasing certain chemicals called as prostaglandins, which inhibit the pain.

How can heat be applied?

index2  index3 index4index5

  • As a hot water bag, pack, poultice or through electrical heat pads.
  • Infrared lamps.
  • Hot spoon bathing (here a wooden spoon is heated in water and after the drops of water are shaken off, the spoon is applied on the affected part.
  • Short wave diathermy and other methods in Physiotherapy.
  • Along with balsams in combination with massage therapy.

Heat should not be used in:

  • In patients taking anti-blood clotting medications, as this may cause more bleeding.
  • In patients having a blood clot in the muscles, as this clot may be dislodged and may travel to the brain or the heart and cause sudden death.
  • It should never be applied over the abdomen of pregnant women.
  • In cases where a tumor is suspected. Application of heat will allow the tumor to spread.
  • In cases of burns, after radiation therapy in cancer patients.

BEE VENOM THERAPY.

index

Bee venom therapy is also called as APITHERAPY.  Man has known the medicinal use of honeybee products since ancient times.  Honeybee products have been found useful in treating arthritis, degenerative diseases and many inflammatory conditions.

The Chemical Ingredients in Bee venom:

Honeybee venom contains at least 18 active substances. Melittin is the most potent ant-inflammatory agents known. It is 100 times more potent than Hydrocortisol.  Adolapin is another strong anti-inflammatory substance, which inhibits Cyclooxygenase activity and thus exhibits an analgesic effect. Other substances include, hyaluronidase, Compound X, Phospholipase, A2, Histamine and Mast Cell Degranulating Protein, Neurotransmitter like Dopamine, Nor adrenaline and Serotinin.

Medicinal uses of Bee venom:

images2  index3  images4

It is useful in a number of conditions such as,

  • Arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis, Scleroderma.
  • Acute and chronic injuries, bursitis, tendonitis and chronic neck pains
  • It is useful in dissolving scar tissues and keloids.
  • It is useful in Multiple Sclerosis, where its mechanism of action is poorly understood.

How is Bee venom therapy performed?

Bee venom therapy can be performed by a beekeeper and the patient can be taught to use the bees. The bee is taken out of a hive and the number of sites, where the patient is to be stung is determined beforehand and it depends on the condition that the patient is suffering from. A simple tendonitis may respond with a few stings. A chronic arthritis may require 2 to 3 stings for about 3 months, before a favorable result is obtained.  Patient with Multiple Sclerosis take many months before they respond.

The Side effects of the treatment are

  • Inflammation
  • Itching
  • Rarely a severe life threatening choking may result because of an anaphylactic reaction.

Conclusion:

Many physicians are using Bee venom therapy. They do this by obtaining the venom in sterilized vials and inject it under the skin, sometimes after mixing it with a local anesthetic agent to prevent the pain that accompanies the sting.  It is better to administer this in a clinical setting, where the doctor has measures to counter the severe allergic reactions that sometimes occur.

GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT.

images

Grapefruit Seed has antibiotic, anti-septic, disinfectant properties and is also used as a preservative in food and cosmetics.

 Introduction:

index2

The Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) owes its existence to Dr. Jacob Harish, who was a physicist.  World War II forced him to abandon his studies and become a fighter pilot. Just after the war Dr. Jacob Harish was breakfasting on Grape fruit, which was a rare treat in France.  While he savored the sweetness of the fruit, he was intrigued by its bitter taste of the seed and wondered if it had any medicinal properties.

It took years of perseverance on Dr. Jacob’s part to study this fruit. More herbal, plant and fruits should be investigated for anti-microbial properties.  After the war, he migrated to the US and took a medical degree and did research on Grapefruit Seed Extract and found it useful.

Grapefruit extract is non-toxic, environmentally safe and quickly biodegradable and it is inexpensive. Dr. Harish was honored for his pioneering work and was invited to Europe, as a guest of honor at the Pasteur Institute of France, which is Europe’s leading AIDS research center.   For years, this Institute has been researching the potential of GSE, as a prophylactic against the HIV virus, as well as against the secondary infections associated with AIDS.  The farmers of Europe now use a powdered form of GSE, in fish and poultry feed to fight pathogenically lethal bacteria, such as Salmonella and E Coli.

The uses of Grapefruit Seed Extract:

  • Reports from the University of Georgia in Athens, by Dr. Wyatt have proved that GSE has a wide spectrum of activity that offers antiviral, antibacterial (both against Gram + and Gram – bacteria), antifungal and antiprotozoal activity.
  • When GSE is mixed with soap and cleaning products, the cleansing product only kills the germs and does not harm the skin.
  • It is extremely useful when used as a pre-surgical scrub for a minute
  • A growing number of dermatologists, aestheticians and cosmetologists are using GSE mixed in soaps and skin cleaners.
  • A few drops of GSE have been found to be useful when put in one glass of water, as a preventative for “Traveler’s Diarrhoea”.
  • 3 to 4 drops of GSE per gallon of reservoir water into a humidifier will prevent the growth of algae.
  • It is a sure shot remedy in cases of Sore throats caused by Streptococci and gargling water with GSE definitely prevents sore throats.
  • It has been found useful by dentists to cure Oral thrush infections due to Candidial infections.
  • It has been found to be useful in protozoal infections such as Amoebiasis.

Conclusion:

Research into the flora and fauna has become very important because we are living in an era of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and a tremendous and frightful resurgence of killer viruses like Hepatitis and AIDS.   Perhaps, the answer to infectious diseases lies in cheap Holistic Alternatives such as the humble Grape fruit Seed Extract and many other unknown plants and fruits.

BIOENERGETICS AND BIODYNAMIC THERAPY.

images
Dr. Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957) is the father of using Bio-energy as a therapy. Dr. Reich believed that Bio-energy travels throughout the body and would become trapped in muscles and harden them, whenever emotions were repressed. Such a blockage of energy also destroyed the natural feelings and inhibited sexual responses.

Dr. Reich discovered during his research that loosening chronically rigid muscles resulted in physical sensations such as, pricking; itching and emotional arousal and he came to regard these sensations as reflecting the movement of bio-energy of the body.

From these concepts, two therapeutic approaches evolved; Bioenergetics by Dr. Alexander Lowen and Biodynamic Psychology by Dr. Gerda Boyesen.

Bioenergetics:

Dr Lowen’s approach lay in three areas:

Grounding which concentrates on the stance of the patient with the feet on the ground and energy flowing freely in a circuit which reinforces a positive link with the earth.

Breathing: Here regular breathing patterns are established so that the sensory awareness increases and the feeling of being alive are enhanced.

Character Structure: Bioenergetics recognizes five major character types and most people manifest aspects of all the five.

  • Schizoid character: which is represented by holding the body together as a result of fear of it’s falling to pieces. The social behavior is not in harmony with body awareness.
  • Oral Character: the muscular pattern reveals a fear of abandonment or isolation.
  • Psychopathic character: Here a muscular pattern of holding up against fear of failure is revealed.
  • Masochistic character: The muscular pattern derives from tension caused by blocking feelings of rights and needs.
  • Rigid character: This is exemplified by a muscular pattern of holding back against emotions.

The School of Biodynamic Psychology:

Dr. Gerda Boyesen pays special attention to the interplay between the mind and body processes. Her approach uses massage and bodily movement techniques and works on the premise that a neurotic person embodies his neurosis in physiological processes.

Conclusion:

Bioenergetics is a Holistic therapy, which seeks to release defense structures that we have evolved to cope up with everyday stress and help us experience a sense of well being and pleasure.
