TIPS FROM MASTERS…

NATRUM SULF occupies a very useful place in late effects of head injuries.  The mauling of mastoidectomy comes under this head and it has been our good fortune to see NATRUM SULF at work here.

Dr. Goullon.

A condition from which the NATRUM SULF patients are liable to suffer is a fairly acute attack of Appendicitis with extreme pains in the caecal region. Apparently it is a retro-caecal appendix, because they always complain of extreme pain going right round to the back, rather than of pain over the Mc. Burney’s point; it is the type of appendix, which is associated with a degree of jaundice.  The cases in which I have seen the most striking results from NATRUM SULF have been those of appendix abscess where there has been a retrocaecal appendix and a tendency for the inflammation to track up and conditions suggesting a sub-phrenic abscess. I have never seen a sub-phrenic abscess cleared up with NATRUM SULF but have seen several cases now in which there was a definite tracking inflammation going up under the liver; with a nasty, swinging temperature, cases which have been operated on and were obviously going to the bad and in which there was a tendency to involvement of the chest, particularly the left lower lobe, and they cleared up in the most astonishing way on NATRUM SULF.

Dr. D. M. Borland, M.B., Ch.B.

The strongest remedy in my experience for LEUKEMIA is NATRUM SULF.

Dr. Bellokossey.

In some cases of asthma of children, where, in addition to the wheezing and frequency of attack, there is the great prostration one would expect in ARSENIC and ARSENIC palliates only, try NATRUM SULF.  It has saved the day in such cases. I mean cures and by cure I mean that it not only clears up untoward symptoms by bringing the patient to an improved state of health.

Dr. T. K. Moore, M.D.

If there is a history of slow or precipitate labor, use of forceps, and or slowness in recovery from birth, or difficulty in taking solids later, head injury remedies, NATRUM SULF, NATRUM MUR or CICUTA VIROSA may be required.

Dr. Foubister, M.B., Ch.B., D.C.H. etc.

I should like to add a point in reference to the intense occipital pains in NATRUM SULF.  NATRUM SULF is a very valuable remedy in emotional states, on conditions of the Pons and Cerebellum.

Dr. J. W. Waffensmith.

I find that NATRUM SULF very useful in overcoming the bad effects of typhoid injections.

Dr. F.C.E. Schnider.

NATRUM SULF is Schuessler’s specific for epidemic Influenza, where it has given a good account of itself.

Dr. T.K. Moore, M. D.

NATRUM SULF is sometimes is sometimes very well indicated in acute hip joint disease, particularly, when it is the right hip which is affected.

Dr. D.M. Borland, M.B., Ch.B.

One point in the digestive upset of NATRUM SULF is that whether it is a gall bladder or liver upset or whether it is an appendix, concurrently with the attack, the patients are liable to get suppurative conditions about the root of the nails.  I have verified that several times. A patient with a chronic liver who whenever he is getting a slight increase of disturbance, begins to develop suppurating places round his nails, will very often run into NATRUM SULF.

Dr. D. M. Borland, M.B., Ch.B.

I find this remedy very useful in cases of bad effects following head injuries.  It is also very useful in cases of Jaundice and in many cases of dyspepsia.

TAI CHI CH’UAN THERAPY.

Tai Chi is a Chinese therapy.  Tai Chi is motion, unity, and a dance where there is a surrendering to the natural flow of the energy of the universe.

Tai Chi originated from a Taoist monk named Chang San-feng.  He was inspired into Tai Chi after watching a magpie attacking a snake.  The snake teased the magpie and always remained out of its grasp by twirling, wriggling, curling and spiral motion.  Similar movements are an integral part of Tai Chi.

Tai Chi means “Supreme Ultimate” and Ch’uan means “fist or boxing”.  Tai Chi is different from Kung Fu or Karate, which are aggressive martial art forms.  Tai Chi is sublime and replaces aggression and hostility with sensitivity and the capacity to yield to an overwhelming calmness.

Tai Chi is a process of exploring the body and the mind through creative movement and reflects the fact that “Nature is always in motion”.

Persons practicing Tai Chi experience transformation and sense of vitality in the body.  In Tai Chi, all movements complement each other.  According to Chang Sen-feng, the inner strength is rooted in the feet, developed in the thighs, controlled by the waist and expressed through the fingers.  There are various forms of Tai Chi, Yang and Wu, but they tend to overlap.

Today the best-known international exponent of Tai Chi is Al Chung Liang Huang who has taught in the U.S. and the Far East.  Al Huang teaches that Tai Chi is a form of Self-actualization in keeping with other Holistic philosophies and emphasizes the inter-relatedness of the mind and body and the unimposed flow of energy through them.

Tai Chi is a process of self-discovery like Yoga and demonstrates the link between the body movement, the posture, and contemplative states of being.  Tai Chi helps one achieve serenity in the midst of activity. It teaches us that we live in an inner as well as an outer world – the inner domain of thought and reflection and the outer one of force and action.  Tai Chi resolves shows us how we can blend both these domains and achieve a sense of unity and fulfillment.

 TIPS FROM THE MASTERS…

NATRUM MUR acts splendidly in Sunstroke where a deficiency of it allows moisture to be drawn from other parts, especially the base of the brain with the result dangerous and sometimes fatal.

Dr. Heselton.

I have seen NATRUM MUR, applied in the worst types of migraine headache that are throbbing, beating and terrifically severe headaches accompanied with high blood pressure, are relieved frequently by NATRUM MUR.

Dr. A. H. Grimmer, M.D.

The most dramatic and outstanding cures that I have witnessed with NATRUM MUR have been in the role of the deficiency diseases of the infants, and children, such as high grades of malnutrition and lack of development of speech center.

Dr. William B. Griggs, M.D.

If there is a history of slow or precipitate labor, use of forceps, and or slowness in recovery from birth, or difficulty in taking solids later, head injury remedies, NATRUM SULF, NATRUM MUR or CUCUTA VIROSA may be required.

Dr. Foubister, M.B., Ch.B., D.C.H. etc.

NATRUM MUR affects a radical cure of constipation when many boasted and popular remedies fail. It is a regulator of water in the system and if moisture were drawn from rectum, loss of function results and produces constipation.

Dr. Heselton.

Against the ravages of Malaria, both prophylactic and curative, we will require the study and use of a larger group of remedies.  Yet a sufficiently narrow group of the most often indicated with enable the prescriber readily to cure 95% of the cases.  Starting with NATRUM MUR, ARSENICUM ALBUM second and CHINA SULPH third, these remedies properly given in a highly malarial district will afford certain protection against the disease.  And if the disease were present in an individual, these same 3 remedies need to be studied and compared for the selection of the curative agent.

Dr. A. H. Grimmer, M.D.

SEPIA AND NATRUM MUR, are the 2 most potent drugs for cataract: NATRUM MUR yields best results because it is one of the few drugs known to be capable of causing cataracts.

Dr. Speins Alexander.

A much-neglected curative sphere of NATRUM MURIATICUM is the eye work.  I have cleared up some cases of muscle imbalance with a single prescription that kept the ophthalmologist busy for months without producing any permanent results and the visual field had been greatly distorted with unsteadiness of vision; objects become confused, the eyes gave out in reading or writing, with marked weakness of the internal rectus muscles.

Dr. William. B. Griggs, M.D.

NATRUM MUR is a promising remedy for such diseases as Addison’s of Leukemia and for cachexia, which sometimes accompanies Exophthalmic goiter.

Dr. Lilienthal, M.D.

Some 80% of fever blisters can be quickly cured often in 36 hours with NATRUM MUR in 6x, 12x or 30th potencies. I have seen some cases of fever blisters cured as if by magic with RANUNCULUS BULBOSIS or RANUNCULUS SCLERATUS, which would not respond to NATRUM MUR in any potency.

Dr E. Petric Hoyle.

A woman has lost her husband or child, suffers much from grief, IGNATIA will quieten her over the present moment; when such troubles keep coming back, NATRUM MUR will finish the case.

NATRUM MUR in brandy, a tablespoonful in the evenings, is said to produce conception, from intercourse the following night. Several surprising examples of this have been related to me.

Dr. Hering, M.D.

Four Pain Killing herbs.

Introduction:

Millions of people around the world live with acute or chronic pain, and their desperate attempts to alleviate it; has made prescription painkillers a billion dollar industry. Fortunately, nature has provided us with numerous herbs that contain significant analgesic properties. While not all of these foods are as aggressive as prescription painkillers, they are much safer to consume and lack their unpleasant side effects.

White Willow

White willow is the most famous of the 300 willow species, and its bark enjoys a time-honored reputation as a natural analgesic. The Chinese were known to use white willow bark for pain relief as far back as 500 B.C. In the West, American Indians often used it to treat inflammation.

White willow works as a painkiller because it contains a glucoside called salicin, which possesses proven anti-inflammatory and anti-neuralgic properties.

White pillow bark can be consumed in powdered or tincture form. It is a much more natural painkiller than Aspirin, whose principal ingredient is actually salicin.

Turmeric.

Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat sprains, bruises, and inflammation in the joints and stomach, The active ingredient is the rich concentrations of curcumin, a compound with proven anti-cancer, antioxidant, and analgesic properties. It is now known that curcumin can decrease inflammatory pain in rats. Turmeric powder is usually added to curries and other rice dishes, but it can also be taken as a health supplement.

Corydalis

Corydalis is another herb with a long history of use for pain relief. Chinese medicine is particularly fond of it, and often prescribes it for headaches, migraines, and menstrual pain. Corydalis was even recommended to individuals who suffered from back pain caused by muscle spasms and nerve problems.

Corydalis is commonly found in Chinese herbal stores. It can be purchased as granules, which should be dissolved in hot water and sipped throughout the day, or in capsule form.

Devil’s Claw

Devil’s claw is a herb native to southern Africa. Devil’s claw contains three active ingredients – harpagoside, harpagide, and procumbine – that are responsible for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.  Devil’s claw is easy to find online or in health food stores. It is usually taken in powdered or tincture form, though it can also be drunk as a tea if you can tolerate its bitter taste.

TIPS FROM THE MASTERS…

Pressing in the abdomen towards the genitals, as if everything would protrude, and as if menstruation would appear, BELLADONNA will misfire, SEPIA does, and when some good repertory leads one to NATRUM CARB, we trust, one will give that remedy in the 200th and publish the result.

Dr. Jones.

In obstinate cases of sterility, think of NATRUM CARB.

Dr. Moore, M.D.

Clinically, NATRUM CARB has served when the cervix is enlarged with ill shaped os: Dr. Betts has had good results with it in congenital defective growth of the anterior vaginal wall and this ill-shaped os.

Dr. Farrington, M.D.

In children with milk upsets and milk diarrhea accompanied by thrush, NATRUM CARB. Is one of your biggest standbys.

Dr. D. M. Borland, M.B., Ch.B.

NATRUM CARB would be the remedy to come to mind in the digestive troubles of chronic ‘soda addicts’. It is the picture of ‘cachexia alkaline’ due to the prolonged use of one of the many proprietary-alkalizing agents for a ‘sore stomach’.

NATRUM CARB is one of our greatest neurasthenia remedies.  In its pathogenesis, the drug impairs the functioning activity of the mind and body, giving rise to a state of mental and physical relaxation and inertia, which is equaled by few remedies and paralleled by none.  The mental capacity is amazingly affected, there exists incapacity to think, poor comprehension and forgetfulness. It the patient attempts to read or listen to a speaker, he has great difficulty in grasping ideas.  If he undertakes any mental exertion, the head feels stupefied and he fails.

Dr. Charles C. Boericke, M.D.

NATRUM CARB was sometimes very effective in cases, which displayed very little reaction especially in elderly people.

Dr. Alva. Benjamin, M B., Ch.M, F.F. Hom (Lond).

HONEY THE NATURAL HEALER OF WOUNDS.

Introduction:

Honey has been recognized and accepted as a reputable and effective therapeutic agent by allopathic physicians for wound healing.  There is a plethora of medical information that honey is very effective as a dressing for wounds, burns and skin ulcers.  When used on wounds, it has been found that honey quickly reduces the inflammation, the pain, removes the malodor from the wound and the dead slough and healing occurs quickly with minimal amount of scarring.  Furthermore, honey reduces the need for skin grafting and creates a moist environment for rapid skin re-growth and unlike antiseptic agents; honey is not harmful to the tissues.

Which is the best honey for healing:

There is however a marked variation in the potency of the ant microbial power of honey from various sources.

Honey derived from the ‘Manuka plant’ (Leptospermum scoparium) has an exceptional amount of antibacterial activity.  The most heartening aspect of this is that, Honey derived from the Manuka plant exhibits the maximum antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus Aureus, a common wound infecting organism and this honey is also effective against the dangerous MRSA species (Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

Mode of Action of Honey:

The exact mechanism is not known but Manuka Honey is effective in many multi antibiotic resistant strains of MRSA and several other ‘super bugs’.  The postulated mechanisms of how honey works are:

  • The hydrogen peroxide generated by honey is responsible for its therapeutic effects.
  • It stimulates growth of skin cells responsible for replacing damaged tissues.
  • Honey has the property of development of new blood vessels.
  • It activates protein-digesting enzymes in tissues, involved in the healing process.
  • Honey has a strong antioxidant property, which prevents the formation of free radicals, responsible for the inflammatory response.
  • Honey has a natural anti-inflammatory action.
  • The acidity of honey and the sugars it contains prevents the ammonia release from the bacteria, which harms the patient.
  • Honey itself is rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and amino acids useful for wound healing.
  • Honey is cheap for use.
  • It does not stick to the skin and hence the dressings can be changed painlessly.
  • It is useful in the elimination of constant wound debridement.

Other uses of Honey:

  • Honey is also useful in Peptic Ulcer disease.
  • It is useful diarrhea
  • It is useful in eye infections.
  • It is useful to prevent dental decay.
  • It is useful in fungal infections of the skin
  • It is useful in certain forms of eczemas.

Conclusion:

Honey is an ancient traditional wound healing dressing that has been used by several cultures, throughout history.  The credit for reviving interest in Honey, in recent times should go to Dr. Peter Molan who heads the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand.

WHAT IS UNANI MEDICINE?

Introduction:

Unani Medicine is a Traditional Medicine, which is holistic and it has its origins in Ionia in ancient Greece.  The principles of Unani medicine are similar to the principles elucidated by Hippocrates (460 to 370 B.C) and Galen (129 and 199 A.D).  Unani Medicine developed due to considerable contributions made by Avicenna, and Arabic scholar (986 to 1036 AD). Unani has also included many principles from ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian traditions.  It is believed that some of the principles of Unani are over 6000 years old.  In recent times, it has been integrated with modern systems and it has evolved.

Principles of Unani Medicine:

Unani Medicine believes that the body has to be looked upon as a whole.  Unani believes that the life force or thymos  (also called pneuma) and four vital essences or humors.  In disease, the thymos or the humors may be affected.  It is believed that the thymos is affected by emotions, age or disease. The problems of the humors are common, and the humor may be corrupted by wrong food habits or by the external environment.

How are health conditions treated in Unani Medicine?

The Unani physician is called as Hakim and he makes a diagnosis after taking a detailed history, observing the patient, seeing the tongue, eyes, hands and fingernails.  The Hakim takes the pulse and takes a note of subtle changes in the pulse, which may indicate a disease state. In addition, the Hakim tests the reflexes in the hands, feet and outer ears.

The treatment in Unani:

The treatment involves some dietary changes and Herbal medicines and inclusion of mineral substances. Sometimes some work is done on toning the body reflexes by using massage techniques.  Applications of cold, heat or suction cups are also employed.  In serious diseases, the reflex points are punctured and a few drops of blood are released.

Conclusion:

Like many Holistic systems, Unani Medicine has evolved over thousands of years and it is a safe and gentle Holistic Medical system, which has unsurpassed efficacy in the treatment of many acute and chronic diseases.
